Er...BCS.

Enough people will look past the much-anticipated collision of undefeated, name-brand powers and sort 2009 in with the long line of BCS train wrecks when it comes to picking a championship. In fact, it’s almost a straight redux of the most spectacular crash in the short history of the BCS, in 2004, which also saw five teams finish the regular season undefeated, three of them from “Big Six” conferences, and three of them emerge from the bowl wringer that way. Compared to Texas — a team with no notable nonconference wins, no wins over a top 15 (or top 20, depending on the poll) team, and two narrow escapes by a combined four points against the only Top 25 defenses it’s faced — Cincinnati and TCU both stack up well enough to complain as loudly as Auburn did about being snubbed at 12-0 five years ago. And their basic flaw is the same: They started from too far behind in the polls.

That’s not an argument that the Bearcats or Horned Frogs (or Boise State, the upstart’s upstart with the first-rate win over Oregon) deserve anything more than Alabama or Texas, only that any system that culls the field to two contenders by means other than actual football has no business calling itself a “championship.” For at least the ninth time its 12-year life, the BCS can’t possibly fulfill its mission of matching the top two teams head-to-head because it automatically excludes most of the qualified applicants.

(via Dr. Saturday)

According to the Big Twelve...

…A clock adjustment is only a reviewable play when the ruling on the field is being reversed (i.e. a play ruled a fumble is ruled down by contact - the officials can review the clock and reset it to the correct time.)

However, a review like the one that took place in the Texas-Nebraska game last night is NOT, according to the conference’s replay rules, one that is eligible for review. The correct call was probably made, but the way in which is was reached is not within the rules, giving Nebraska a legitimate complaint. Although if the roles were reversed and the rules followed, Nebraska (as well as fans of TCU and Cincinnatti) would be outraged that replay cannot correct such plays.

Either way, the Big Twelve went outside the rules to get the call right, but maybe they should take a look at those replay rules, eh?

It was nice...

…watching Grand Valley win that football game yesterday. You know, how they let the top teams play each other to decide who gets to be the champion? It was fun. I just hope those student-athletes aren’t too tired for classes this week…

Hey guys, remember this?

Hey guys, remember this?

‘Sabout time.

‘Sabout time.

f***yeahmichigan:

Chapter three of Going Rogue entitled “Drill, Baby, Drill,” relays these stirring words attributed to UCLA basketball legend Hall of Fame Coach John Wooden:

“Our land is everything to us,” the wizard of Westwood supposedly said. “I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember our grandfathers paid for it with their lives.”

But Coach Wooden never said that. As noted by Huffington Post’s Geoffrey Dunn, John Wooden Legs, a Native American activist, one time tribal president of the northern Cheyenne, whose grandfather fought Custer at Little Big Horn, he said something close to it. But the legs quote from an essay includes references to the Cheyenne and ends with “we remember our grandfathers paid for it with their life.”

Dunn notes that the Palin botched quote perfectly matches one from a website called The Quote Garden. So Palin has hastily cut and pasted a quote from a Native American activist to support her “Drill Baby, Drill” meme, and attributed it to a great basketball coach.

I’m sick again. I’ve been perpetually sick since September, it feels like. Throat on fire, lungs full of gobbledy-gook, etc. But only at about 40% of how sick I feel like I could be. It’s almost worse.

I feel like I’ve fallen behind with two weeks of classes left. Especially in my Volunteerism class.

I could go for some egg nog. Nothing like thick dairy and egg to add to the mucous-coating in my throat. Mmmm.

I think I’m going to go to sleep now, if I can get myself away from FishVille.

Wanna get frustrated?

Read YouTube comments. Suggested topics of videos:

Religion. Particularly anything involving Rob Bell.

Politics. Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann videos are a good start.

9/11. Conspiracy theorists and their counterparts can get very mean.

JFK. See above.

Sports. Any video involving the Red Wings, Sidney Crosby, or whether or not soccer is a real sport.

Music. Bob Dylan and The Beatles videos usually bring the best (and worst) out in people.

Any combination of the above. Especially the first two.

Anything involving homosexuality. Try to find a video that blends into any of the first four categories for maximum frustration. Examples:

Homosexuality and the Bible.

Gay marriage.

Larry Johnson and homophobia in sports.

Freddie Mercury.

Anything involving race. See above advice.

The Ku Klux Klan.

President Obama.

Violent off-the-field actions by professional (or even college) athletes tends to bring about a lot of “animal,” “thug,” and worse.

Okay, well there is a lot less racism found on videos involving music, but I bet you can find some if you really want to dig.

This might be the most efficient way to lose your faith in the entirety of humanity…or at least the majority of YouTube commenters.

annogus:
